Nursing home and signs of pneumonia

December 29, 2011 under All

In other cases, pneumonia is caused when bacteria or viruses that are normally present in the mouth, throat, or nose inadvertently enter the lung. Diagnosis and treatment will vary depending on your signs of pneumonia. Nursing home–associated pneumonia is defined as pneumonia that develops in the outpatient setting or within 48 hours of admission to a hospital in patients with increased risk of exposure to MDR bacteria as a cause of infection.
People with infectious pneumonia often have a productive cough, fever accompanied by shaking chills, shortness of breath, sharp or stabbingchest pain during deep breaths, confusion, and an increased respiratory rate. Other abnormal breathing sounds may also be heard through the stethoscope or via percussion (tapping on your chest wall).

Common medications for heart palpitations

December 20, 2011 under All

A heart palpitation (often just called a palpitation) is the sudden sensation that you can feel your heart beating in your chest. Heart palpitations can certainly be associated with shortness of breath, that is, the two symptoms together without a serious condition being present. That usually indicates that the irregularity of the heart rhythm is significant and may signal the need for a more comprehensive evaluation. Class I of antiarrhythmic drugs is known as “sodium channel blockers.” These medications have long been used in the United States to control arrhythmias. They work by blocking “sodium channels” (the transport of sodium across the cell walls) in order to slow impulse conduction in the heart. Your doctor may order certain tests or refer you to a cardiologist who may order additional tests such as: blood and urine tests, electrocardiogram (EKG), stress test, chest x-ray.

How to diagnose lyme disease

December 19, 2011 under All

The first symptom is usually a rash, which may look like a bull’s eye. As the infection spreads, you may have the following lyme disease symptoms:
• A fever
• A headache
• Muscle and joint aches
• A stiff neck
• Fatigue
The later phases of Lyme disease can affect the heart, causing inflammation of the heart muscle. This can result in abnormal heart rhythms and heart failure. Patients with late stage Lyme disease have been shown to experience a level of physical disability equivalent to that seen in congestive heart failure. In rare cases, Lyme disease can be fatal. Having such a wide range of symptoms can make Lyme disease difficult for doctors to diagnose, although certain blood tests can be done to look for evidence of the body’s reaction to Lyme disease.

Common symptoms of Pink Eye

December 19, 2011 under All

Pink Eye is more correctly known as Madras Eye or Conjunctivitis. If you are experiencing any of the pink eye symptoms, you should be evaluated by an eye doctor to determine the cause. Often, viral “cold-like” symptoms, such as sinus congestion and runny nose, are also present. Your doctor may prescribe medicated eyedrops or ointment to reduce redness and discomfort, and to help prevent spreading of the infection. Except in obvious pyogenic or toxic/chemical conjunctivitis, a slit lamp (biomicroscope) is needed to have any confidence in the diagnosis. Examination of the tarsal conjunctiva is usually more diagnostic than the bulbar conjunctiva. As a precaution, most newborn infant eyes are treated with silver nitrate and/or antibiotic ointments, to make sure any possible infections are stopped before they can cause damage.

Huntington’s disease studies

December 14, 2011 under All

It typically becomes noticeable in middle age. HD is the most common genetic cause of abnormal involuntary writhing movements called chorea.
In the last several years, scientists working with support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) have made several breakthroughs in the area of huntington’s disease research. With these advances, our understanding of the disease continues to improve.
A person who inherits the HD gene will sooner or later develop the disease. Whether one child inherits the gene has no bearing on whether others will or will not inherit the gene. The rate of disease progression and the age of onset vary from person to person.

How Dangerous is Dengue Fever?

December 1, 2011 under All

Dengue fever is the most important mosquito-borne viral disease affecting humans. The Dengue fever symptoms include: irritation, restlessness, sweating, severe headache, muscle and joint pains, fever, rash, and ecchymosis. The disease itself is rarely fatal, but a more serious complication, Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), is far more dangerous. Without treatment, DHF can kill 20 percent of its victims. With medical treatment, the fatality rate can drop below one percent. The Dengue fever is not transmitted from one person to another but from bites of the Dengue mosquito (Aedes aegypti). Everyone should be vigilant in order to prevent any Dengue fever outbreak and to be able to recognize its symptoms as soon as it manifests. There is still no known cure or vaccine for Dengue fever. Treatments available are increase fluid intake and administration of intravenous fluids and electrolytes to correct electrolyte imbalances and dehydration, oxygen therapy to treat abnormal low blood oxygen, and transfusion of fresh blood or platelets to correct the bleeding problems.

About Tree Identification

December 1, 2011 under All

When confronted with a tree you are not familiar with, you have to ask yourself a lot of questions. Tree identification is basically a process of elimination. First of all you have to decide if it is a tree or a shrub. If it is a tree, go on and answer these questions: Is it a conifer or a deciduous tree? If it is a coniferous tree does it have needle or scale-like leaves? If the tree is a deciduous one, has it single or compound leaves? Are the compound leaves opposite or alternate? How do the leaves, flowers, and fruit look?
By knowing a few simple facts, you can place trees in small groups and make a positive identification by knowing one or two additional facts about each individual tree.
