In other cases, pneumonia is caused when bacteria or viruses that are normally present in the mouth, throat, or nose inadvertently enter the lung. Diagnosis and treatment will vary depending on your signs of pneumonia. Nursing home–associated pneumonia is defined as pneumonia that develops in the outpatient setting or within 48 hours of admission to a hospital in patients with increased risk of exposure to MDR bacteria as a cause of infection.
People with infectious pneumonia often have a productive cough, fever accompanied by shaking chills, shortness of breath, sharp or stabbingchest pain during deep breaths, confusion, and an increased respiratory rate. Other abnormal breathing sounds may also be heard through the stethoscope or via percussion (tapping on your chest wall).
